Cosmic Saltillo
Architect: Clayton Korte
Landscape Architect: Ten Eyck
Landscape Construction: SLC
In this adaptive re-use project, a pair of historic East Austin Texaco depots were converted by Clayton Korte & Ten Eyck into the second outpost of Cosmic Coffee, turning to SLC with an emphasis on re-purposing materials for the vast outdoor space.
Recycled concrete from the buildings’ original foundations was re-used for paths and landings around the landscape. Water features imagined by Ten Eyck anchor the space and were created with re-purposed found materials, including a large steel funnel from a gravel crusher in Balmorhea and oil pipes found on site.
Existing vegetation was allowed to grow back densely, encompassing the garden area between the two buildings and accompanied by numerous native and well-adapted plants, including lilypads floating among the fountains
